Volume Velocity!

11 11 2009

We checked out these videos on TeacherTube to continue with our learning about Volume (V= L X W X H)

Vitamins and Minerals

11 11 2009

As part of our topic ‘Healthy Bodies’ we are looking at vitamins and minerals and how they affect our bodies.

Miss Myers found some videos for us to look at on the HowStuffWorks website, and we had some interesting discussions about our new learning.

First we looked at Human Atlas: Vitamins and Minerals , then we looked at How Vitamin Drinks Work

Last week we looked at the effects of exercise on the body, but how about the effects of exercise on the brain??? We found out here!

What Would You Do?

11 11 2009

Continuing on with our what would you do??? discussions, think about and use some descriptive writing to respond to this prompt…

Which piece of technology would you rather go without for a month?

We brainstormed our favourite technologies, like: XBOX, iPOD, mobile phones, laptops, internet…

WHY??? Have a good argument!

(Thanks Mr Kennedy for this idea)

Our World Turned Upside Down!

10 11 2009

Shock! Horror! Controversy! Revenge! Hilarity! Laughter!

Well, didn’t we get a massive surprise when we returned from our kitchen session today! We returned and found EVERY TABLE, EVERY CHAIR, OUR COUCHES AND EVEN MISS MYERS’ CHAIR turned completely UPSIDE DOWN!!! S8 had gotten their revenge from our fabulous ‘Pinkification’ (we totally covered pink-hating-Mr Vail’s classroom in pink stuff last term).

We thought it was hilarious! (Not the reaction they were hoping for! Being awesome S7, we took it well and thought it was great!)

Here is us enjoying our interesting classroom set up. What act of revenge should we plot for our revenge??? We need ideas!

Girls Rock! Boys Rock!

9 11 2009

Over the course of 8 weeks this term, Grade 5 students are participating in a program called Boys Rock! Girls Rock! There is a boys group and a girls group, and each week they participate in cool activities with the team leaders. The program focusses on things like: self image, friendships, personalities, dealing with problems.

Here are some reflections from S7 students:

“I had fun when we were working in our sketch books, and write about what our bodies do well.” Taya

“It’s really fun!” Shannon

“It gets your mind off what is happening around the school.” Ava

“I think it’s great how we are learning more about ourselves.” Celeste

“It’s really fun, and I like how it is so creative.” Courtney

“I like how we get to do lots of different things, and be really creative.” Khyl

Bear Grylls – Man vs Wild

3 11 2009

We have been talking about ‘What would you do?’ scenarios, after Miss Myers saw this documentary about a man called Bear Grylls (strange name, we know) who gets dropped into remote areas of the world with only the clothes on his back and a few other items, and shows his audience how to survive.

We watched a video from the Discovery Channel website, showing an overview of the documentary of his Iceland adventure. You can see it here.

We brainstormed some interesting questions for Bear:

- What is it like going to place where people don’t survive? (Michael)
- Don’t you get bored? (Taya)
- Is it scary being by yourself? (Nick)
- How does it feel to know that you might not survive? (Jen)
- What would you do if a bear attacked you, Bear? (Sarah)
- What’s it like to be you fighting the wild? (Zane)
- Have you ever thought that you might die? (Byron)
- What’s it like to wrap yourself in a camel? (Lachlan)
- What are your main tools to survive? (Ava)

21st Century Classrooms

3 11 2009

Miss Myers found this on Allison Hall’s blog. What do you think a 21st century classroom should look like?

Get Your Heart Pumping!

29 10 2009

This week we have been looking at the impact of exercise on the body, as part of our term topic of Healthy Bodies.

Our initial discussion focused on what we experience when we exercise: red cheeks, sweating, breathing harder, heart pumping, pulse churning. We then focussed on Miss Myers’ favourite question – WHY? We talked about the reasons why your body reacts in this way.

We then tested it! We tested our resting pulse before we went hoola hooping to see the change in our heart rates. Later we tested it even further with skipping. Wow what a difference – lungs working hard, flushed skin, pulse going madly!!!

We are currently working on presenting our new learning, after group work on the different functions of the body responding to exercise.

Check out our rad hoola and skipping moves!!!

The Amazing 16 Person Square Metre

20 10 2009

Today in Maths we continued our Measurement learning. We were focussing on Area and Perimeter.

Miss Myers had stuck masking tape on the floor to outline a square metre. We had a very detailed discussion about what makes a square metre, and estimated how many would fit into our classroom (we calculated 96, in case you were wondering).
We talked about how to calculate the area of shapes.

Our super challenge was to estimate how many students could fit into the square metre. Estimates varied from 9 to 17. Then we tried it! Lots of laughing, strategies and learning followed.

In the end, Fletcher started to sway, then everybody fell out of the square! Oh well. Byron’s estimate of 16 people was correct.
We talked about how different it would have been if we tried it with Prep students…

Grade 5s then were given the task of creating a perfect square metre out of newspaper, using as little newspaper as possible.

Walkathon

19 10 2009

Today we had our Walkathon to raise money to finish building our kitchen.

We have been busily raising money, and today we had a great walk in the fresh air around our school.
