The Amazing 16 Person Square Metre

20 10 2009

Today in Maths we continued our Measurement learning. We were focussing on Area and Perimeter.

Miss Myers had stuck masking tape on the floor to outline a square metre. We had a very detailed discussion about what makes a square metre, and estimated how many would fit into our classroom (we calculated 96, in case you were wondering).
We talked about how to calculate the area of shapes.

Our super challenge was to estimate how many students could fit into the square metre. Estimates varied from 9 to 17. Then we tried it! Lots of laughing, strategies and learning followed.

In the end, Fletcher started to sway, then everybody fell out of the square! Oh well. Byron’s estimate of 16 people was correct.
We talked about how different it would have been if we tried it with Prep students…

Grade 5s then were given the task of creating a perfect square metre out of newspaper, using as little newspaper as possible.

Great activity Miss Myers class. I am sure the engagement and learning was wonderful. Myself and my friend Mr. Lund were wondering if your class has the ability to Skype? We thought if you did, it would be great to set up communication through it. If not, we would still enjoy setting up something for our classes to get to know each other. Thank you – Mr. Fletcher

Thanks Mr Fletcher!
We had lots of fun doing that activity. We might try for 17 or 18 people, see what happens!

We saw that you have added weblinks to your pages; check out our Learning Websites link for some more good ones.

Hi Miss Myers, this looks like a great activity. We just looked at area so we’ll have to go back and revisit just to do this.

By the way, great blog! We are a Grade 5 class just down the road (Ocean Grove PS) and I have noticed we use a lot of the same websites and resources as you.

If you would to see what we do, have a look at our class blog.
